Russian nuclear energy corporation, Rosatom, has offered to sponsor bright Kenyan students planning to study for an undergraduate degree in Nuclear Science at two Russian universities.

In a statement to newsrooms, Rosatom said it will pay full tuition fees and partially cater for living expenses for the students admitted to the National Research Nuclear University (MEPhI) in Central Russia and Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) in Siberia

Rosatom Central and Southern Africa’s chief executive Dmitry Shornikov said this is aimed at developing Kenya’s capacity in nuclear engineering.

“Scholarships are available for students interested in studying nuclear energy related fields in Russia and include tuition fees and free preparatory courses of Russian language,” he said adding that the students will have access to subsidised accommodation, library funds and practical experience at Russian nuclear enterprises. 

Mr Shornikov said students well-versed in mathematics and the sciences should visit Rosatom regional Facebook page: FB.com/RosatomInAfrica for a supplementary guide on the application process before filling the application forms available on www.russia.study with the deadline for the first round of applications closing on February 15.


The offer comes amid ongoing discussions on possible rollout of a nucleur energy plant programme in the country aimed at easing energy costs.

MEPhI has more than 75 years’ expertise in nuclear engineering and has been a key partner of Rosatom in the field of training nuclear specialists and currently hosts 1,500 foreign students from 57 countries, including 50 students from sub-Saharan Africa.

TPU boasts of being the only Russian university equipped with a nuclear research reactor that was commissioned in July 1967 and is now used for peaceful atom technologies such as nuclear medicine, transmutation neutron alloying, isotope engineering, thorium power engineering.
