Pogba on target as Man United sink relegation threatened Aston Villa

BIRMINGHAM, , United Kingdom, Jul 9 – Paul Pogba was on target, scoring his first goal of the season as Manchester United extended their winning run after thrashing relegation threatened Aston Villa 3-0.

The resounding win saw United move to within a point of the Premier League’s top four as they continue pushing for a Champions League slot next season.

Bruno Fernandes’s controversial penalty won by the Portuguese midfielder opened the scoring after a slow start from the in-form visitors.

Greenwood then took centre stage with his fourth goal in three games as he drilled home on his supposedly weaker right foot just before half-time.

Fernandes then teed up Paul Pogba to score his first goal for over a year as United became the first team in Premier League history to win four consecutive games by a three-goal margin.

Villa’s winless run stretches to 10 games as Dean Smith’s men remain rooted in the bottom three, four points adrift of safety with just four games to go.

United now have a return to the Champions League next season in their own hands as they face fourth-placed Leicester on the final day of the season and will fancy their chances to chasing down Chelsea for third.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are now 17 games unbeaten in all competitions and showed their firepower once more with Fernandes and Pogba supplying the ammunition for Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in attack.

Villa were made to regret not making the most of a sloppy start from United as Trezeguet hit the post with just David de Gea to beat.

Fernandes has been the catalyst for United’s turnaround since his arrival in January and he was at the centre of a hugely contentious call that spark the Red Devils into life.

The former Sporting Lisbon midfielder appeared to initiate the contact with Villa right-back Ezri Konsa as he spun just inside the area.

Jon Moss had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and much to Smith’s ire on sidelines VAR did not intervene to overturn the decision.

Fernandes has shared responsibilities from the spot with Rashford since the restart, but the former took responsibility this time to send Pepe Reina the wrong way for his eighth goal for the club.

Greenwood scored powerfully off both feet against Bournemouth at the weekend and sent Villa a warning shot with a low left-foot drive that Reina parried to safety.

Fernandes then headed over United’s best move of the half from Luke Shaw’s cross.

But Villa could not hold out without conceding again before half-time as they gave Greenwood far too much room on the edge of the area to smash home his 16th goal of the season.

United have now scored 14 goals in winning their last four league games and turned on the style after the break.

The impact of the coronavirus outbreak could turn Pogba’s United career around. Prior to the pandemic, the French World Cup winner seemed set to leave the club for the second time in his career.

But with interest from Real Madrid now unlikely to materialise this summer given the economic impact of the crisis, Solskjaer is hoping to extend Pogba’s contract beyond 2022.

The impact of having both Fernandes and a fit-again Pogba has transformed the creativity of the United midfield and they combined for United’s third with the help of some more slack Villa defending.

Pogba was given time to control and measure his show from Fernandes’s cut-back to arrow the ball into the bottom corner for his first goal since April 2019.

Fernandes then teed up Martial to crash a shot off the underside of the bar and Reina denied Rashford from Pogba’s sumptuous pass in stoppage time as United had to settle for three.

Buenos Aires

Argentina is trying to solve a medical mystery after 57 sailors were infected with the coronavirus after 35 days at sea, despite the entire crew testing negative before leaving port.

The Echizen Maru fishing trawler returned to port after some of its crew began exhibiting symptoms typical of Covid-19, the health ministry for the southern Tierra del Fuego province said Monday.

According to the ministry, 57 sailors, out of 61 crew members, were diagnosed with the virus after undergoing a new test.

However, all of the crew members had undergone 14 days of mandatory quarantine at a hotel in the city of Ushuaia. Prior to that, they had negative results, the ministry said in a statement.

Two of the other sailors have tested negative, and two others are awaiting test results, the province’s emergency operations committee said.

Two sailors were hospitalized.

“It’s hard to establish how this crew was infected, considering that for 35 days, they had no contact with dry land and that supplies were only brought in from the port of Ushuaia,” said Alejandra Alfaro, the director of primary health care in Tierra del Fuego.

A team was examining “the chronology of symptoms in the crew to establish the chronology of contagion,” she said.

The head of the infectious diseases department at Ushuaia Regional Hospital, Leandro Ballatore, said he believed this is a “case that escapes all description in publications, because an incubation period this long has not been described anywhere.”

“We cannot yet explain how the symptoms appeared,” said Ballatore.

The crew was placed in isolation on board the ship and returned to the port of Ushuaia.

Argentina exceeded 100,000 total cases on Sunday, and the death toll rose to 1,859. The majority of infections are in the Buenos Aires area.

The Vice Chancellor welcomed the decision to re-open institutions of higher learning albeit in strict conformity to the set guidelines even as he acknowledged that digital learning is now the future.

Waudo says at Mount Kenya University the learning environment is fashioned for learners in a way that makes them ready for the job market once they graduate.

This after a recent study by research firm CPS International ranked MKU graduates among the best in the job market.

The survey also ranked MKU as a university of choice among the tops private universities in the Country and beyond.

MKU founder Simon Gicharu said they have put in place adequate measures to ensure their students access quality yet affordable education especially during the COVID 19 pandemic period.

“The university produces skilled graduates who are not only employable but have the necessary skills for self employment,” he said.

He said the university has embraced an innovative teaching, learning and assessment strategy which is appropriate for its learners.

Prof Waudo says the university academic structure encourages progression from certificate, diploma to degree levels and by doing so offers a platform for everyone to acquire skills needed in the job market.

MKU has developed new programmes, which have been accredited by the Commission for University Education to broaden its capacity.

There are various modes of learning for the students with some on full time, others on digital (online teaching and learning), while some opts for part-time learning.

Prof Waudo says digital learning has now taken center stage due to the restrictions brought about by COVID 19 pandemic and the University has had to boost its infrastructure since a majority of students have embraced e-learning.
