Nation Media Group (NMG) Mombasa FC registered their fourth consecutive victory in the Left Foot League when they edged Bamburi Cement FC 3-1 during a thrilling match at Burhaniya Sports Club on Saturday.
Sila Desmond scored a double for NMG with the other goal netted by Mark Mutuku as skipper Fredrick Mwaiwa got a consolation for the Bamburi side.
NMG assistant team manager Daniel Munyao said they deserved to win the game by a bigger margin as they dominated thrughout. “If our strikers had utilised the chances that came their way, we would have won by more than six goals,” said Munyao.
The game started at a fast pace with both teams trying to secure an early goal but both goalkeepers, Mchuinga Babu of Bamburi and NMG’s Ibrahim Zingo made a series of brilliants saves.
However, it was NMG who took the lead with five minutes to half time when George Kariuki set a fine pass for Mutuku to beat Babu with a calculated shot.
In the second half, Bamburi fought hard and could have levelled in the 50th minute when James Kakai sent a powerful drive which was punched for an abortive corner by Zingo. NMG double their advantage on 57 minutes through Desmond off a pass from Kariuki.
Bamburi made two counter-attacks and in the second, they managed to get their lone goal when a defensive mix-up allowed Mwaiwa to blast the ball past the hapless Zingo.
As Bamburi fought for an equaliser, Kariuki made sure he was the maker of all NMG goals when he sent a through ball to Desmond who made a solo move before sending a powerful shot into the far corner.
With the victory, NMG jumped from fifth to fourth position on 13 points from 11 matches. They won four matches, drawn one and lost six. Bamburi are seventh with six points from 10 matches.
