Nairobi County is likely to receive above normal rainfall with spatial distribution in the October, November, December (OND) 2018 season.

The onset of the rainfall is expected between the 2nd and the 3rd week of October.

“The rainfall is likely to be well distributed in space and time but is likely to cease between the third to fourth weeks of December, “ Nairobi Meteorological Director Mary Kilavi said.

Kilavi noted that since the rainfall is likely to be well distributed, it is the right time to accelerate tree planting in order to further green the city.

She however warned that vector- borne diseases like malaria are likely to escalate and advised people to sleep under mosquito nets and seek medical attention once they feel unwell.

To minimize the effects of flash floods, Kilavi asked line sectors to unclog all drainage channels and advised Kenyans to avoid flood prone areas such as quarries and river banks.

She added there was need to reinforce weak structures and report any destruction after a storm.

“Poor visibility and slippery roads could also pose dangers to motorists and pedestrians and hence everyone should take utmost care and heed traffic alerts and alerts issued by the Kenya Meteorological service,” the Director warned.

According to Kenya Meteorological department, the whole country and mainly Northeastern, North-western, Western, Central and the Coastal regions will have well distributed rainfall in the OND season.

The forecast further shows that most counties in Nairobi, Western, Nyanza, Eastern, Central and North Rift Valley, Northeastern and the Coast will receive above normal rain.

In the review of the 2018 March to May season, Kilavi explained that most parts of the county received highly enhanced rainfall with all the five stations recording more than 150 percent of their long term mean.

The rainfall saw Moi Air base recording 792.2 mm, Dagoretti 828.3mm, Wilson 749.8, JKIA 542.1 and Kabete 1012.6mm.

The rainfall, Kilavi noted was the highest ever recorded at most stations and caused serious flash flooding and damage to property.
