Blak Blad of Kenyatta University take on Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology’s Cougars as the inaugural Varsity League kicks off Saturday at the University of Nairobi grounds.

Blak Blad, the University Sevens champion, under faithful coach Michael “Tank” Otieno, could miss the services of dependable Brian Wahinya and Akedias Kwesa, who have been called up to Kenya Sevens.

Their clash with in their Pool “A” match that starts at 4pm. “This is a tricky match since we are just transiting from sevens season. We haven’t really trained and tuned for the 15s season,” said Otieno. “But the boys shall give their best shot.”

Egerton University (EGU) will square it out with Technical University of Mombasa at 12pm at the same grounds in another Pool “A” clash.


Three-time Kenya Cup champions University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine launch their quest for a first Varsity title against the University of Eldoret at 2pm in a Pool “B” match, where Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) will open action against Technical University of Kenya (Tuk) at 10am.

The organisers’, Sports Options managing director Aggrey Chabeda indicated that the league will feature a festival format with matches being played at one venue.

The second leg will be hosted by Catholic University of East Africa on October 6.

KU will stage the third leg on October 13 with Egerton grounds taking their turn to stage the semi-finals on October 20 and UoN the play-offs and final on October 27.
