Livestock keepers in Isiolo County are tapping solar energy in preservation and adding value on meat.

Through a project initiated by Ewaso Ng’iro Development Authority in conjunction with the University on Nairobi, the solar dryers are expected to increase processing of meat helping pastoralists in arid and semi-arid areas access more markets and cushion them from losses during adverse weather seasons.

The use of solar tunnel dryers is expected to speed up the process and increase dried meat supply in major towns in the country.

The solar tunnel dryers are fabricated locally reducing the cost by half compared to imported ones which cost up to Kshs 1.5 million.

The pilot project by the University of Nairobi and the Ewaso Ng’iro Development Authority will see farmers process high value meat products with single dryer that has a capacity to dry up to 3 tons of meat daily.

Besides meat, the dryers that have the option of using electricity can be used in drying maize and other cereals according to the researchers, the technology will allow farmers to plan for the drought cycles.
