– Salah was on target as Liverpool defeated Tottenham 2-0 to lift the Champions League
– The Egyptian was also in spectacular form in the EPL having reclaimed the Golden Boot award
– Mourinho said the Liverpool hit man may have to guide Egypt to AFCON glory to stand a chance of winning the Ballon d’Or
Former Manchester United boss, Jose Mourinho, has advised Mohamed Salah to lead Egypt to African Cup of Nations (AFCON) glory to increase his chances of claiming the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.
Despite enjoying a relatively successful Liverpool debut in 2018, Salah was unfortunate to miss out on the award after finishing sixth in the voting.
The star forward was hampered by a difficult Word Cup campaign in Russia as Egypt failed to collect a single point in the global showpiece.
However, having once again impressed on the club scene in the just concluded season, Salah stands a pole position of gunning for the Ballon d’Or.
But Mourinho believes the former Roma striker can only take a major step to the individual top prize by leading his home country to glory.
“Salah has to win the African Cup of Nations if he wants to compete for the Ballon d’Or,” Mourinho told beIN Sports.
“The tournament is taking place in Egypt , which makes it a demand that has to be achieved,” he added.
The north African nation is playing host to the continental tournament, and Salah will have a chance of shining before home fans.
The Pharaohs have been pooled in Group A of the competition alongside DR Congo, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
