India look to finish off the job as World Cup semi-final resumes

There appeared to be almost more people on the outfield than there were in the stands as India and New Zealand warmed up for the second day of their rain-interrupted World Cup semi-final at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Whereas there had been thousands of India fans in the stands before the match got underway on Tuesday, there were barely a handful present 24 hours later after rain in Manchester meant the match had to be carried over into Wednesday.

New Zealand will resume on their overnight 211-5 off 46.1 overs after the umpires, following more than four hours off the field, finally gave up any hope of completing the match on Tuesday at 6:20 pm local time (1720 GMT).

Ross Taylor is 67 not out and Tom Latham three not out after New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who won the toss, had made a painstaking 67 on a difficult pitch for batting.

There are 23 balls left in the maximum 50 overs of New Zealand’s innings.

As the players warmed up on the outfield, amid dozens of broadcast personnel and security staff, ahead of Wednesday’s 10:30 am (0930 GMT) restart, the sun briefly broke through the clouds.

Although more rain is a forecast, the hope is the match will be able to completed as normal, without the need to reduce overs and revise targets under the Duckworth-Lewis method for weather-affected matches.

But if the minimum 20 overs required in the second innings for a result under the D/L method cannot be completed, India will go through to Sunday’s final at Lord’s on the basis of finishing first in the 10-team group stage to New Zealand’s fourth.

Rain marred the initial stage of the World Cup, with a record four matches washed out.

No reserve days were scheduled then but they have been allocated for both semi-finals, including hosts England’s match against champions Australia at Edgbaston on Thursday, as well as the final.

Countdown begins for Nairobi’s Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour

Published

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 10 – The countdown has commenced as Nairobi prepares to host a round of the inaugural World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series on 26 September.

Kenyan Olympic legend Kipchoge Keino has appreciated the organisers’ gesture in naming the Nairobi meeting the “Kip Keino Classic” in his honour, with the traditional Kenyan hospitality awaiting athletes, fans, officials and the media.

Keino is among the most respected Kenyan athletes of all time, his Olympic gold medals in Mexico 1968 (3:34.91 seconds for the 1500m) and Munich 1972 (8:23.64 in the 3000m steeplechase) inspiring subsequent domination by Kenyan runners at the Olympic Games, World Championships and other major meets.

“It’s a great feeling to be honoured when someone is still alive. May the good God bless Kenya and may the good Lord bless our sportsmen and women,” Keino, 80, acknowledged.

What’s more, the Kip Keino Classic will be hosted in Nairobi’s freshly refurbished Nyayo National Stadium, Kenya’s most popular stadium due to its ambience and proximity to the capital Nairobi’s central business district.

Brand new seats have been fitted, a media centre and tribune built from scratch and the installation of two electronic screens in the stadium is nearing completion in a project personally supervised by Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed.

The Kip Keino Classic’s Local Organising Committee is headed by Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei with the federations executive committee member, Barnabas Korir, the Meet Director.

Nairobi will also host The World Athletics U20 Championships that were initially programmed for 7-12 July, but which have now been rescheduled to a yet-to-be-confirmed date.

With Kenya keeping an eye on the coronavirus pandemic, the 30,000-seat Nyayo National Stadium had a feel of some action under cautious conditions on 11 June 11 it hosted the Kenyan section of the “Impossible Games.”

The highlight was the 2000m Maurie Plant Memorial virtual contest between Kenya’s Team Cheruiyot and Norway’s Team Ingebrigtsen with the latter running at Oslo’s Bislett Stadium.

Team Ingebrigstens – led by the three Ingebrigtsen brothers, Jakob, Filip and Henrik – triumphed in the duel over a strong Kenyan quintet led by world 1500m champion Timothy Cheruiyot and his predecessor Elijah Manang’oi.

Jakob led the Norwegian charge across the line in 4:50.01, beating British legend Steve Cram’s European record (4:51.39) set in 1985, with Cheruiyot leading the Kenyans across under atrocious Nairobi conditions in 5:03.05.

It might have been just a “filler” for the scaled-down Bislett Games Diamond League meeting (due to the coronavirus pandemic), but Kenyan fans and athletes alike wish to see this group of athletes compete at the 26 September Kip Keino Classic.

And Cheruiyot himself has already thrown down the gauntlet.

“We want to invite them (Ingebrigstens) for training in Kenya and for the Continental Tour,” Cheruiyot reacted after the “Impossible Games.”

“We were all in great shape but such conditions don’t bring out the best.

“The track was windy and that made it difficult to move. Jakob and his teammates had good weather and their track was pretty fast and conducive.”

Manang’oi, World 1500m champion in 2017 added, “It would be nice if they are to come and feel the altitude and weather conditions in Nairobi.

“It was rainy and the altitude is high. My body simply failed to move.”

That Kenyan fans and athletes are already in an upbeat mood, seeking revenge over the Norwegians, already makes up for an excellent build-up to what promises to be mouth-watering action at the 26 September Kip Keino Classic.

“We are leaving nothing to chance in organising what promises to be a spectacular Kip Keino Classic,” Meet Director Korir assured.

“Kenya is known for its hospitality and first class athletics organisational acumen which will, again, come into play on September 26.

“We thank World Athletics for giving Kenya and Nairobi this special honour of hosting a leg of the Continental Tour Series,” Korir, a former distance running star added.

On 6 July, President Kenyatta announced a phased reopening of the country after partial lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

As at 6 July, Kenya had recorded 8,068 Covid-19 cases with 2,414 recoveries and 164 deaths.

In the preceding week, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Sport Amina Mohamed named an 18-strong focus group to look into the reopening of sports activities in the country, with their report expected to be presented on 10 July.

While local air travel resumes on 15 July, international flights will be back from August 1 with schools and churches remaining closed and the country maintaining a nationwide 9pm to 4am curfew.

Semenya sends social media into meltdown after Sharing adorable video of baby girl already walking!

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Jul 10 – Becoming a parent is one of the most special things that could happen to a person. Olympic champion Caster Semenya and her wife, Violet Raseboya, surprised the world when they announced they welcomed a baby girl.

This comes one month after the couple announced that they were welcoming a new born.

The happy couple usually keeps their private lives out of the public eye but Semenya posted a video of their little bundle of joy and it appears she’s already walking.

“And we walk,” the Olympic champion captioned the video.

The clip led to fans speculating the little girl is already a year old at least. Semenya also posted a photo of her daughter sporting a pair of Nike shoes and she captioned it, “#1”.

The post could indicate that the little girl turned one or it could simply be Semenya’s number for her daughter.

Regardless, social media users wished the tiniest Semenya family member a happy birthday.

Andile Ncube commented: “Seems to be a family favourite that number, number 1! Happy (birthday).”

Palesa Mohlamme said: “Happy for you and your family.”

Raseboya previously posted a snap of herself on Instagram showing off her baby bump – which was the only image she posted about her pregnancy.

Pogba on target as Man United sink relegation threatened Aston Villa

Published

BIRMINGHAM, , United Kingdom, Jul 9 – Paul Pogba was on target, scoring his first goal of the season as Manchester United extended their winning run after thrashing relegation threatened Aston Villa 3-0.

The resounding win saw United move to within a point of the Premier League’s top four as they continue pushing for a Champions League slot next season.

Bruno Fernandes’s controversial penalty won by the Portuguese midfielder opened the scoring after a slow start from the in-form visitors.

Greenwood then took centre stage with his fourth goal in three games as he drilled home on his supposedly weaker right foot just before half-time.

Fernandes then teed up Paul Pogba to score his first goal for over a year as United became the first team in Premier League history to win four consecutive games by a three-goal margin.

Villa’s winless run stretches to 10 games as Dean Smith’s men remain rooted in the bottom three, four points adrift of safety with just four games to go.

United now have a return to the Champions League next season in their own hands as they face fourth-placed Leicester on the final day of the season and will fancy their chances to chasing down Chelsea for third.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are now 17 games unbeaten in all competitions and showed their firepower once more with Fernandes and Pogba supplying the ammunition for Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in attack.

Villa were made to regret not making the most of a sloppy start from United as Trezeguet hit the post with just David de Gea to beat.

Fernandes has been the catalyst for United’s turnaround since his arrival in January and he was at the centre of a hugely contentious call that spark the Red Devils into life.

The former Sporting Lisbon midfielder appeared to initiate the contact with Villa right-back Ezri Konsa as he spun just inside the area.

Jon Moss had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and much to Smith’s ire on sidelines VAR did not intervene to overturn the decision.

Fernandes has shared responsibilities from the spot with Rashford since the restart, but the former took responsibility this time to send Pepe Reina the wrong way for his eighth goal for the club.

Greenwood scored powerfully off both feet against Bournemouth at the weekend and sent Villa a warning shot with a low left-foot drive that Reina parried to safety.

Fernandes then headed over United’s best move of the half from Luke Shaw’s cross.

But Villa could not hold out without conceding again before half-time as they gave Greenwood far too much room on the edge of the area to smash home his 16th goal of the season.

United have now scored 14 goals in winning their last four league games and turned on the style after the break.

The impact of the coronavirus outbreak could turn Pogba’s United career around. Prior to the pandemic, the French World Cup winner seemed set to leave the club for the second time in his career.

But with interest from Real Madrid now unlikely to materialise this summer given the economic impact of the crisis, Solskjaer is hoping to extend Pogba’s contract beyond 2022.

The impact of having both Fernandes and a fit-again Pogba has transformed the creativity of the United midfield and they combined for United’s third with the help of some more slack Villa defending.

Pogba was given time to control and measure his show from Fernandes’s cut-back to arrow the ball into the bottom corner for his first goal since April 2019.

Fernandes then teed up Martial to crash a shot off the underside of the bar and Reina denied Rashford from Pogba’s sumptuous pass in stoppage time as United had to settle for three.
