The Ministers of Health from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) member states – Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia will Friday jointly launch Polio vaccination campaign for the Horn of Africa in Garissa Town.

In a statement, Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki says due to recent isolation of more circulating vaccine-derived Polio viruses in Somalia, and particularly in areas close to Kenya-Somalia-Ethiopia border, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) recommended two rounds of synchronized Polio vaccination campaigns to be conducted in Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia.

The health CS further says the first round of the campaigns in Kenya will be conducted from 15th to 19th September 2018 and subsequent round in October 2018, targeting 2,827,089 children below 5 years of age.

Kariuki observes the two planned rounds in Kenya will target 12 high-risk Counties that participated in the July and August 2018 rounds namely Nairobi, Wajir, Garissa, Mandera, Lamu, Tana River, Meru, Kitui, Machakos, Isiolo, Kiambu and Kajiado Counties.

“Cumulatively, 2,827,089 children in Kenya below 5 years of age will be targeted during the campaign. The other two target countries will also be conducting their campaigns within the same period”.

The CS has also assured Kenyans that the polio vaccines have undergone rigorous safety procedures during the manufacturing processes.

“The vaccines to be used in the planned campaigns are the ones used in routine vaccination in our health facilities. The vaccines have undergone rigorous vaccine safety procedures during the manufacturing processes” she said.

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 9 – Deputy President William Ruto on Saturday hosted leaders from Mt Kenya region to discuss how to re-engineer the country’s economy.

Ruto said the meeting which was a follow-up to a similar forum held in Maasai Mara on May 1 deliberated on collaborative efforts to re-engineer government economic approach to one that promotes enterprise and fosters the empowerment of ordinary Kenyans.

During an engagement with three representatives from each of the 11 counties from Mt Kenya region, it was agreed that more targeted and inclusive sessions should be held with Hustler Movement representatives, Members of the County Assemblies, religious and business leaders to follow as the country opens up.

The DP has been building the Hustler Movement, a political group championing for a bottom-up economic model, as his preferred platform for the 2022 presidential run.

At Maasai Mara, Ruto was accompanied by economist David Ndii who briefed the legislators on DP’s proposed ‘Bottom-Up Economic model’ which seeks to uplift the common citizen and provide them with an opportunity to have a say in government.

The DP on Friday held another meeting with over 50 individuals including a section of Mt Kenya where the politicians and experts from different sectors discussed economic revival, a subject Ruto has been propagating since the pandemic broke out in the country.
