The Ethiopian Airlines is set to construct an airport city that could accommodate 80 million passengers yearly according to the Ethiopian News Agency. The airport city will be built at the outskirts of Addis Ababa in Abu Sera, a Bishoftu town.

According to the carrier’s chief executive Tewolde GebreMariam, preparations for building the airport city have been finalised. The airport city will be built according to international standards.

The Upcoming Airport City

Tewolde said the site for the airport city was chosen because of its elevation which is lower than that in Addis Ababa. The area stands at 1,900 metres above sea level while Addis Ababa is at 2,400 meters above sea level. The low elevation of is conducive for takeoff.

The cargo logistics centre will serve industrial parks located in Bole Lemi and Dukem and another park being constructed at Adama.

Tewolde recently suggested that African nations should buy a stake in Ethiopian Airlines, the largest carrier on the continent by revenue. The Ethiopian government is considering privatising the carrier as it seeks to attract foreign investors.
