It is now clear that Baringo senator Gideon Moi is trying to play a major role in Uhuru Kenyatta succession, after his party, KANU, formally entered into a post-election pact with the ruling Jubilee party. Political pundits are in doubt whether the move was shot in the arm by Uhuru or a poisoned chalice in the making.
Kenyatta who apparently was under siege in the ruling party that is dominated by the deputy president allies was left with no choice but to seek the former ruling party in these dying moments of his last term. Already, the president has brought on board the Orange Democratic Movement party led by Raila Odinga, the Wiper party under Kalonzo Musyoka, who are other cogs as he attempts to take charge of his succession, after betraying his deputy president who is determined to be the fifth president of Kenya. Uhuru’s choice of the son of the dead former president Daniel Moi first is seen as a desperate move to have Gideon assist him to checkmate Ruto in the Kalenjin politics where the deputy president is the undisputed king.
Second he prefers Gideon to return favour to Moi who largely contributed to his presidency when Moi unsuccessfully tried to make him his successor in 2002. With Gideon, Uhuru is also sending a message to the Kalenjin community that he has not forsaken them, after abandoning Ruto something that many say Uhuru seems to be taking the Kalenjins for small children who can be cheated with a ball gum for their lollipop. Uhuru and Gideon know that it is a daunting task to wrestle the Kalenjin community from Ruto, but politics being the art of the possible, the two have embarked on that journey well aware of the politics of dynasty versus hustlers that is already shaping the succession politics. To galvanize the support of the Kalenjin, Moi would have to work extra hard and adopt a new and better strategy.
Infact, in the absence of Ruto, Gideon is not even the replacement if you ask locals who say they are done with Moi. It is against this background that he has been playing catch up after he first plunged in politics in 2002, upon the retirement of his father and captured the Baringo Central constituency seat. He lost in 2007 and re-emerged again in 2013 where he was elected as the senator for Baringo. Baringo county is a fanatical Ruto region and in 2013 and 2017 Moi was forced to engage in tough campaigns to capture the seat following stiff opposition from the Ruto team. His performance in the county is being questioned with talk that he is interested in natural resources that have been discovered in the county.
Away from Baringo Gideon enjoys some support in West Pokot county where Governor John Lonyangapuo and the senator Samuel Poghisio were elected on Kanu ticket, Another MP elected on Kanu ticket is Samuel Moroto and his Tiaty counterpart William Kamket. But Lonyangapuo has since shifted to Ruto camp. There is no love lost between Poghisio who was picked to the majority leader and Lonyangapuo. It is said Poghisio wants to vie for the gubernatorial seat. There is virtually no presence of the former ruling party in the other counties dominated by the Kalenjin, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet and Elgeyo Market which are leaning to the Ruto side. After the demise of Moi, Kanu secretary general Isaac Salat said that the party would be revamped and that many people were eager to join it that remains to be seen.
Gideon during the funeral was also handed a baton as a symbol and promised to take over the mantle. Many however said Gideon was made leader of the Moi family and not the community. What remains to be seen is whether Gideon will walk the talk, taking into account that he is facing a hostile community after Uhuru betrayed them by not supporting Ruto for the top seat in 2022. The Kalenjin community are known to vote to a man, wherever they have their interest taken care of, the reason they voted for the ODM leader in 2007 and also did the same to Uhuru in 2013 and 2017. But they are known to rebel when they feel their stakes are not taken care of.
This was seen in 2005 when they rejected the referendum despite Moi supporting it and went on to vote against Mwai Kibaki in 2007. In 2010, in support of their son Ruto who was the lone voice to oppose the referendum for the current constitution, they voted against the wishes of President Kibaki. The foot soldiers in Gideon’s camp that have an arduous task to woo over the community include the Elgeyo Marakwet governor Alex Tolgos, MPs Paul Tiren, Kamket, Joshua Kutuny and former MPs Musa Sirma, Zakayo Cheruiyot, Frankline Bett and former Bomet governor Isaac Rutto. It will be interesting to see how politics will unfold in the Kalenjin land.
Disgraced TV anchor to battle for Murang’a woman rep 2022 – Weekly Citizen
The hint by former Citizen TV news anchor Jacque Maribe that she will join the murky waters of politics by gunning for the Murang’a woman representative’s seat has excited the constituents as the battle will now pit two media personalities with controversial lifestyles.Maribe will battle it out with current holder Sabina Chege, a former Kenya Broadcasting Corporation Kikuyu vernacular station presenter, Coro FM.
Though Sabina had hinted that she would go for the gubernatorial seat after current holder, Mwangi wa Iria’s second and final term comes to an end, her allies revealed that she has dropped her interest on the decorated seat, opting to defend her current seat.Sabina has reportedly teamed up with Murang’a senator Irungu Kangata who is preparing to go for the gubernatorial seat.Another factor that will make the race exciting is that while Sabina is allied to Uhuru Kenyatta’s Kieleweke camp, Maribe is likely to cast her lot with deputy president William Ruto’s camp.Maribe’s close relation with Ruto is evidenced by the fact that her lawyer in the murder charge that she is facing is Katwa Kigen, a close ally of the deputy president.
Kigen represented radio journalist Joshua Sang at the International Criminal Court at The Hague, Netherlands, where he was charged with crimes against humanity alongside Ruto.Another pointer she will be in DP’s camp is the fact that one of her closest friends, some say boyfriend, is Dennis Itumbi, Ruto’s chief blogger.Itumbi formerly worked at State House heading the digital department but was shown the door together with four others members of the Presidential Strategic Communication Department.Maribe broke the news of her decision to enter politics through her Instagram Live in an interview with Dj Mista Dru.She declared she will enter the ring following pressure from Murang’a residents though she is facing charges in court. But it is her controversial lifestyle that will put her on the spotlight once she formally enters the race.A mother of two from different fathers, she was in December 2018 forced to quit her job at the Royal Media Services after she visited Itumbi at a police station.
She had lied to her employer that she was not feeling well only to be photographed with Itumbi at a police station, prompting the Royal Media Service management to demand she “show-cause why” she should not be fired.
Maribe hit headlines for the wrong reasons when she was held for months in police custody after the murder of Monica Kimani, a South Sudan-based businesswoman.Monica was allegedly murdered by Maribe’s fiancé, Joseph Irungu alias Jowie. They have, however, denied the charges and are currently out on bail. They were charged with the brutal murder of Monica on the night of September 3 2018 at her Lamuria Gardens Apartment, Kilimani in Nairobi.Last year, Maribe signaled her intention to go for a political seat when she threw a birthday party to which she invited women from her home county who pledged their support should she decide to run for an elective position. For Sabina, she was initially in DP’s TangaTanga brigade but shifted base after state agencies started a crackdown on its members.
She is now in Kieleweke brigade aligned to Uhuru Kenyatta supporters in the divided Jubilee party, where she has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of the deputy president. This comes as the race to succeed Wa Iria narrows down to a contest of bigwigs in the region’s politics.Among those touted to go for the seat include Kang’ata who doubles up as senate chief whip and Water principal secretary Irungu Wairagu.Others said to be interested in the seat include former Devolution PS Irungu Nyakera, former senator Kembi Gitura, businessman Julius Kaberere, Raymond Matiba and former Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau. But it is the looming entry of Kang’ata that is causing ripples in the county due to his ties with Uhuru. The soft-spoken 39-year-old city lawyer made history in 2002 when he was elected vice-chairman of the University of Nairobi Students Organisation during his first year.He was 19 years old and since then, no first year student has held the post.Kang’ata, who served Kiharu as MP between 2013 and 2017, was 2002 election elected Murang’a Town ward councillor.
He came to national limelight when he represented Rebecca Kerubo, a guard at a chemist in Gigiri in the case against then Deputy Chief Justice Nancy Baraza. He is now the one tasked with de-whipping Ruto’s allies in the senate as well as cutting to size rebels in Mount Kenya region, a task that will see him bag the Jubilee ticket for the governor’s seat.
Before Kangata’s elevation to senate chief whip, the Water PS, Wairagu was the talk of the county after he was caught up in a fierce political war with Wa Iria fueled by his 2022 ambition. The PS had upped his forays in his home region to launch national government development projects, a move that has irked the governor, who interpreted the moves as premature campaigns. Also eyeing the seat is Gitura, who unsuccessfully defended his senatorial seat and lost to Kangata. But pundits aver that Kembi’s popularity has declined in the county considered a hotbed of vibrant politics and his estranged former wife, Felistus.Kaberere campaigned for Murang’a gubernatorial seat in 2013 but dropped out of the race to focus on 2022 polls.Kaberere vied under Alliance Party of Kenya.
Another name that is featuring is that of Nyakera.Nyakera, who claims that his excellence in service delivery made Uhuru to sack him, is now the Democratic Party deputy party leader. He was among youngest PSs in Uhuru’s regime, having served under former president Mwai Kibaki as Transport PS.The Stanford University graduate was recently quoted saying his focus on service delivery, and detachment to politics, also contributed to his being shoved out of government.Former Kigumo MP Kamau is also said to be interested in the seat.Kamau lost to Wa iria during the Jubilee primaries where he garnered 118,274 votes against Wa Iria’s 205,976.Raymond is also said to be interested in the seat but is yet to make up his mind. The younger Matiba has a massive following.
Talk Kalonzo too broke to fund presidential race – Weekly Citizen
With two Ukambani governors serving their second and final terms in office expressing their intention to vie for presidency in 2022, the region’s politics where Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has been dictating the direction for decades is now taking a new dimension. The decision by the two to run is upon revelation, Kalonzo is allegedly not in position to mount a presidential campaign hence his decision to join Jubilee coalition for political survival.
Kalonzo is depending on tycoon Peter Muthoka to fund his activities after falling out with former Machakos senator Johnson Muthama. To many, the declaration by Makueni governor Kivutha Kibwana and his Machakos counterpart Alfred Mutua to gun for presidency in 2022 in a move meant to challenge Kalonzo’s dominance of the region’s politics is purely on Kalonzo’s financial situation linked to millions used to treat his wife.Besides, the two governors are the Wiper party leader’s worst critics, having parted ways with him at different stages in their political careers. The latest to disagree with Kalonzo is Kibwana who was even stripped his chairmanship of the party months after he folded his Muungano Party to merge with Wiper. The governor was dropped as Wiper chairman mid last year and replaced by aged Chirau Mwakwere during a retreat of the party’s national executive council held at the Kenya School of Law in Karen, Nairobi. Anne Kanyi was elected vice chairperson.
For the Machakos governor, he differed with Kalonzo during his first term as governor, going ahead to found the Maendeleo Chap Chap party, in which he successfully defended his seat in the 2017 general election.Besides, Maendeleo Chap Chap bagged a number of elective seats in the region, thereby diminishing Kalonzo’s foothold of the region.Since falling out with Kalonzo, Mutua has been escalating his political onslaught against him, going to an extent of demanding the Wiper leader quits politics for the sake of economic growth in Ukambani. The governor has heaped blame on the former vice president for the region’s economic neglect, arguing that as the political kingpin, Kalonzo failed to use his influence during the tenures of retired presidents Daniel Moi and Mwai Kibaki, when he served as minister and later vice president, to push for implementation of development projects. The Maendeleo Chap Chap boss has been making the remarks on the backdrop of a growing rebellion by Ukambani governors calculated at upstaging Kalonzo from the national negotiating table on behalf of the Kamba community on the strength the former vice president only seeks personal favours from the respective governments.
The three governors, Mutua, Kibwana and Kitui’s Charity Ngilu have repeatedly told Kalonzo to retire for fresh leadership to take up the region leadership mantle. And now unlike the past four general elections – 2002, 2007, 2013 and 2017 – where Kalonzo shepherded the community to rally behind Kibaki, himself and ODM leader Raila Odinga where he was his running mate in the latter two, this time round Kibwana and Mutua have vowed to go all the way to the presidential ballot in 2022, a move that will divide the community with over 2 million votes.Apart from Kalonzo, who contested the presidency in 2007, and came third after Kibaki and Raila, the other person from the community to have made a stab at the presidency is Ngilu.Ngilu, unsuccessfully vied for the presidency in the 1997 general election on a Social Democratic Party of Kenya ticket, finishing fifth behind the eventual winner, Daniel arap Moi, Kibaki of DP, Raila of NDP and Wamalwa Kijana of Ford-K.This time round, Ngilu is preparing to defend her seat but her dream of serving a second term is being fought by Kalonzo.
For Kalonzo, he has kept the voters guessing on whether he will make another stab at the presidency. The former vice president recently signed a cooperation pact with the ruling Jubilee party, formalizing the two parties’ partnership. The deal between the two parties was penned at Jubilee Party headquarters in Pangani, Nairobi, after which leaders drawn from the two parties held a joint press conference. In attendance were Kalonzo, Makueni senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr, Mwakwere and Judith Sijeny. From the Jubilee side were secretary-general Raphael Tuju and vice-chairman David Murathe.Kalonzo, who was the running mate of Raila in the 2013 and 2017 general elections, did not reveal much the contents of the agreement between the two entities only hinting at possible sharing of slots in the parliamentary committees. He also rubbished rumours he was preparing to join the government as a new cabinet secretary, saying that he is in the Wiper steering wheel to stay. But as Wiper penned the deal with Jubilee, the party’s one time financier, Muthama was preparing to ditch it to support William Ruto’s 2022 bid.Days later Muthama declared he had ceased being a Wiper member, stating he left it when he withdrew out of the Machakos senatorial race in 2017.
But now the spotlight is on Kibwana who has officially announced he will be in the presidential ballot in the 2022 election.Further, the governor mended political fences with Muthama, and both expressed their intent to dislodge Kalonzo from the community’s leadership. For Mutua, he recently announced he would officially launch his campaigns to succeed Uhuru in 2022.For now, there are reports Kalonzo is lkkely to team up with Baringo senator Gideon Moi and possibly Raila, if Uhuru’s script on his succession is accepted by all of them.In that scenario, the Wiper leader will be rewarded with either the national assembly or senate speaker’s post although this might not be practicable given his age and in a time when the coronavirus is phasing out the elderly from crowded places such as inside parliament. But the big question is whether the Kamba community will accept such a line-up, given that their son has played second fiddle twice to Raila.
Inside Siaya politics ahead of 2022 elections – Weekly Citizen
THE race for Siaya gubernatorial seat is likely to take a new dimension following high indications that area Senator James Orengo wants to take over from Cornel Rasanga the incumbent whose term will come to an end come 2022. As the race to succeed Rasanga gradually shapes up as expected, it will inevitably divided leaders two years to the ballot. Already, there are political formations, with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga’s close allies caught up in the succession battle.
At some stage, political undertones marked the burials of Achieng Oneko’s wife, Loice Anyango and William Oduol’s father in Rarieda and Alego-Usonga sub-counties respectively. While Siaya Senator James Orengo is yet to declare his political interest in 2022 elections, a section of his allies has been drumming up support for him. The name of Jubilee party secretary Raphael Tuju has also cropped up with word, due to his current battle over the ownership of his hotel with African development Bank, he has decided not to run but concentrate on the legal battle. “A time has come that we must now reward our heroes with political seats and Senator Orengo suits the reward,’ said Samuel Atandithe Alego Usonga Mp. Among those who are said to have the interest to succeed Governor Cornel Rasanga but are also yet to declare their interest publicly are Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi, Deputy Governor James Okumbe and Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda.
Former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo who vied for the seat during the 2017 general elections and lost to Rasanga has also declared his interest to run for the seat. Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju, who has also been touted as a possible candidate for the county’s top seat has previously dismissed the claims. Tuju, who was speaking during the burial of Oneko’s wife in Kunya village, Rarieda sub-county, said there were bigger positions than the governorship. Orengo was caught up in a war of words with Bondo MP Ochanda on the happenings of 2013 party nominations and how they settled for a gubernatorial candidate. While Ochanda dismissed calls for dialogue or consensus as an approach for electing the next county boss, his Rarieda counterpart Otiende Amollo said it will be imperative for the political class to sit and agree on how to share the county seats. MP Ochanda narrated to the mourners how a similar approach led the county into a stalemate, which then resulted in Governor Rasanga coming into the picture as the party’s candidate, against the wishes of residents.
“In 2012, we were with Oduol, Orengo, and former Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo in one camp. Oduol and I were eyeing the Governor’s seat, while Orengo had interest in the Senate seat and we campaigned. Orengo and Midiwo always told us our issue with Oduol would be sorted,” narrated Ochanda. He recalled that on December 13, 2012, a lot of issues cropped in when they were campaigning in Gem when Midiwo said the party had decided that Oburu would be the candidate. “This is the reason I cannot trust any issue of dialogue on who will fly the party ticket for the race because the same people calling for dialogue are the ones who messed us up in 2013. I will not accept and I will not be a party to it. I will support someone who has interest of the people at heart,” he stated. Ochanda claimed that there are certain things that happened in 2013 during nominations that must not happen again for they are meant to deceive people and drive them away from the party.
But an angry Orengo, who was speaking on the county gubernatorial succession politics for the first time dismissed Ochanda and asked him to also publicly tell the people the exact things that had happened in Bondo sub-county during the 2013 party primaries. “Ochanda, when telling a story gave the full picture of what happened. You should also tell these people how you became MP. You are not telling us how you won,” said Orengo. Orengo argued that any member of ODM party who has declared interest to run for the top county seat should be allowed to do so Gumbo is so far the only person who has so far come out in the open over the issue. Gumbo contested for the seat in the 2017 general elections but lost narrowly to Rasanga. He filed a petition in the high court but lost. Gumbo is so far the front runner for the seat as the clock ticks towards 2022. Rasanga is said to be gunning for either the Senate of the position of Nyanza regional governor if such a position is created courtesy of the building bridges initiative.
Former Bondo Member of Parliament Dr. Oburu Oginga is also said to be keen on becoming the Senator if Orengo guns for the position of governor. Oginga gunned the gubernatorial seat in 2013 but lost in the primaries to Oduol amidst protests from both sides. Rasanga was handed in the party ticket as a compromise candidate while Oginga was later nominated to parliament. The Governor beat Gumbo in the last polls amidst stiff opposition from the former legislator. It was earlier believed that former Cabinet MinisterTuju who is also a former Rarieda Mp would also be gunning for the position of Governor even though he has been silent over the matter. Other reports have indicated that Oburu Odinga will be returning to his former Bondo seat after Ochanda performed dismally during his ten-year hiatus as an elected Mp. But insiders say that Oginga is fronting for his son Jaoko Oburu to take over from Ochanda come 2022. Jaoko is an executive in the government of Rasanga where he is in charge of public works.
Orengo though not development conscious will be banking on his relationship with Odinga to catapult himself into office. Keen observers believe that the position of Governor would be better; left for a technocrat like Tuju who is development conscious. Tuju is credited with the initiation of numerous development projects in Rarieda between 2002 and 2007. Sources say plans were underway for Orengo to meet Ugenya elders over his next political dispensation. It is believed the Senator will seek the elders’ blessings before publicly declaring his interest to the electorate… The Senator, unlike his competitors, will be riding on his vast experience in politics and vicious advocacy for democracy in the country. But his move is unlikely to go down well with some county leaders who have publicly declared their preferred candidates in the race. Gumbo has warned ODM officials against endorsing any candidate in the guise of loyalty to the party or its leader Raila Odinga. Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi has hinted that ODM will not gamble with the Siaya governor seat, the county being Raila’s backyard.
According to a section of Siaya residents, Orengo is likely to enjoy the support of ODM. Wandayi and Siaya woman representative Christine Ombaka are among leaders who have endorsed Orengo saying he has been tried and tested. Siaya is largely ODM and residents have always been rallied to vote in a six-piece model in favour of the Orange party. This means all candidates will fight hard to clinch the party’s ticket at the primaries come 2022The governor seat has emerged as one of the most lucrative owing to the power trappings that come with the office. At the constituency level, Gem Mp Elisha Odhiambo is to face Midiwo who has defected back to ODM. It is not clear why Wandayi would be keen on taking on Orengo by the horns given the senator’s high stature politically. Ugunja MP Dave Ochieng is said to be keen on defending his seat with the same case in Rarieda where the incumbent Otiende Amollo enjoys both support of Odinga and his followers due to his pivotal role in the presidential election petition filed after the 2017 general polls.
In Alego Usonga has emerged that area lawmaker Atandi could face tough hurdles defending his seat in the 2022 general elections. According to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) officials in Siaya county, the vocal parliamentarian seems to be losing his popularity to a newcomer. Siaya ODM youth official Charles Onguko says that Atandi is facing opposition from Martin Otieno alias Mijesh, a newcomer who is very keen on unseating him in the much-anticipated race. He added that the same has seen the vocal leader become furious with area leaders and politicians seemingly allied to Mijeshi. This follows allegations that Atandi hired goons to attack a nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA) last year With such grave allegations about the lawmaker renting the air, it is believed he is losing his popularity and respect by the locals as Mijeshi uses the opportune moment to make himself popular.
